TAYFUN ERDOĞMUŞ
07.03.2008 — 05.04.2008
The exhibition of Tayfun Erdoğmuş, a faculty member at Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, opens on March 7, 2008, at Galeri Nev in Istanbul.
Born in 1958, Erdoğmuş graduated from the Department of Painting at the State Academy of Applied Fine Arts in 1979. He participated in the Salzburg Summer Academy in 1980 and 1991 with scholarships from the Austrian Government. Between 1986 and 1989, he continued his work in Berlin with a DAAD scholarship. In 1997, he was awarded the title of professor at Marmara University.
Tayfun Erdoğmuş held his first solo exhibition in 1979, and most recently exhibited his works at Galeri Nev in 2004.
“The visual language in Tayfun Erdoğmuş’s art is shaped not only by the formal echoes of this geography’s visual heritage, but also by the presence of an inquisitive eye that examines tradition and the past both from within and from without. The sanctity of writing, the transformation of the spoken word into image, and the reading of text as an abstract sign of divine belief… In Erdoğmuş’s paintings—composed in a ‘natural’ alphabet of flowers and leaves that seem to conceal a sacred text—there is a powerful interpretation of the appearance, meaning, and impact of calligraphy as an art form that has become alien to us in the present day, here and now, following historical processes and identity quests lived out on these lands.”
